Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 27, 2026
PlantMap ("we", "us", or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what information the PlantMap iOS app collects, how it is used, and your rights regarding that information.
Contents
1. Permissions We Request
PlantMap requests the following iOS system permissions. Each is optional until you use the feature that requires it; you can revoke any permission at any time in iOS Settings โ PlantMap.
We never request background location. Location is accessed only while you are actively using the app.
2. Information We Collect
PlantMap collects only the information needed to provide its features. We do not collect names, email addresses, payment information, or account credentials.
Photos you capture or import for plant identification and garden records. Stored on-device and in your iCloud account only.
Your approximate location when you pin a plant, create a garden map, or request AI identification. When-in-use only; never in the background.
Plants, gardens, care notes, health logs, and reminders you create. Stored locally and optionally in iCloud.
Used only during nearby garden sharing (Multipeer Connectivity) to show your device to other PlantMap users on the same local network. Never sent to our servers.
3. How We Use Your Information
- Plant identification โ Photos and location are sent to the PlantNet API and an AI language model (Groq/Llama) to identify species and generate care information. Neither service stores your data beyond the duration of the request.
- Garden management โ Plant and garden records are stored on your device using SwiftData, and optionally synced to your personal iCloud account. We cannot access your iCloud data.
- Nearby sharing โ Garden data you choose to share is transmitted directly to nearby devices over an encrypted local connection (Multipeer Connectivity). It is never routed through our servers.
- Care reminders โ Local push notifications are scheduled entirely on-device. No notification content is sent to any server.
- QR label printing โ Label content is generated on-device and sent directly to your AirPrint or connected printer. No print data passes through our servers.
4. Third-Party Services
PlantNet API โ Photos and your approximate location may be transmitted to PlantNet servers to identify plant species. See plantnet.org/privacy.
Groq (LLM) โ The identified plant species name is transmitted to Groq's API to generate care information. No photos or precise location data are sent to Groq. See groq.com/privacy.
Apple iCloud โ If you enable iCloud sync, your gardens and plants are stored in your personal iCloud account. All data is subject to Apple's Privacy Policy. We cannot access your iCloud data.
We do not use any analytics SDKs, advertising networks, or crash-reporting services that collect personally identifiable information.
5. Data Storage & Security
Your plant and garden data is stored locally on your device using Apple's SwiftData framework. If iCloud sync is enabled, it is stored in your personal iCloud account using Apple's CloudKit infrastructure.
Any API keys you enter are stored in your device's Keychain using iOS-standard AES encryption. They are never transmitted to our servers or logged.
Photos taken or imported within the app are stored in the app's private container and, if iCloud is enabled, your iCloud account. They are not uploaded to PlantMap servers.
PlantMap does not operate servers that store your personal plant data. Your data lives on your device and your iCloud account.
7. Data Retention & Deletion
Your data remains on your device and iCloud account until you delete it. You can:
- Delete individual plants and gardens within the app at any time.
- Export or erase all app data via Settings โ Data inside PlantMap.
- Delete the app to remove all locally stored data from your device.
- Remove iCloud sync data via iOS Settings โ [Your Name] โ iCloud โ Manage Storage โ PlantMap.
We do not retain any copies of your data on PlantMap servers because we do not receive it in the first place.
8. Tracking & Advertising
PlantMap does not track you across other companies' apps or websites. We do not use advertising networks, behavioral profiling, or cross-app tracking of any kind. The App Tracking Transparency (ATT) permission is not requested because it is not needed.
The app contains no third-party advertising SDKs and does not display ads.
9. Children's Privacy
PlantMap is not directed at children under the age of 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app in a way that collected personal information, please contact us at the address below and we will take prompt steps to address it.
10. Your Privacy Rights
Because PlantMap stores your data on your own device and iCloud account, you exercise most privacy rights directly through the app or through Apple's settings. For any other requests:
- Access / Correction โ View and edit all your data within the app.
- Deletion โ Delete data via the app or by removing the app entirely.
- Portability โ Export your data via Settings โ Data โ Export in the app.
